Jets, David Garrard nearing contract agreement, according to report

Garrard hasn’t played since 2010, but he impressed the team enough in a workout to be close to getting a contract.

The New York Jets are nearing a deal with quarterback David Garrard, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Garrard and the team might get a deal done once the team “can work through cap issues,” according to Schefter. A source told Schefter that both sides are “feeling good” about getting a contract signed.

Garrard, 35, hasn't played a single snap in the NFL since 2010. He's spent his entire nine-year career so far with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was the team's primary starter from 2006 through 2010.

Garrard tried grabbing a roster spot with the Miami Dolphins last year, but he was cut in September.

At Gang Green Nation, the crew thinks that Garrard would be a "perfect transitional stopgap" between Mark Sanchez and the quarterback of the future:

It is difficult to say how much Garrard really has left in the tank. That is the reason for the workout. Having a guy who will not blow the game for you and make a few plays in the process could at least give this team a bit of hope next year if Rex Ryan can patch together a good defense. It’s at least something to hope for. It would beat a bunch of Sanchez pick six stomach punches.

The Jets want to bring in competition to challenge Sanchez for the starting job. Just yesterday, word leaked that the Jets might be interested in Brady Quinn. Quinn started eight games for the Kansas City Chiefs last season. He won just one game.

Garrard is 39-37 lifetime as a starter in the NFL. He’s completed 61 percent of his passes for 16,003 yards, 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions. He was a Pro Bowler in 2009.
