The Carolina Panthers have released Ron Edwards, a nose tackle whose two seasons for Carolina were injury-filled and only modestly productive when he was healthy, the team confirmed via press release.

The Panthers opted to release Ron Edwards rather than keep the 34-year-old nose tackle due $1.67 million next season. Edwards only played 11 games in two seasons with Carolina due to injuries.

Releasing the 6’3, 315-pound Edwards opens up $1.67 million in cap space for the Panthers. He had torn his triceps in training camp in 2011, missing the entire season, and after starting 11 games at nose tackle in 2012, he dislocated his elbow, ending his year. Although Panthers blog Cat Scratch Reader had nice things to say after his injury, the Texas A&M product only managed 16 tackles and one sack in two seasons for Carolina.
After Edwards was hurt, second-year tackles Frank Kearse and Sione Fua played at the nose tackle spot.The team could pursue other big bodies if they don't feel Kearse and Fua are up to the task. As for Edwards, it's unlikely he lands much on the free-agent market. Although he has 12 years of NFL experience with the Bills, Chiefs, and Panthers, he hasn't been on the field often recently and he's not a top-level player when healthy by any means. Now, the team must look into re-signing Dwan Edwards, who started at the other defensive tackle spot.
