NFL rumors: ‘Nothing imminent’ between Chargers, Jared Gaither

New Chargers general manager Tom Telesco hasn’t made up his mind on what he’ll do with Jared Gaither -- who would cost the Chargers $6 million in dead money, even if they released him after a troubled first season.

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

Jared Gaither's time with the San Diego Chargers didn't get off to a pleasant start in 2012. Gaither appeared in just four games while rubbing teammates and Chargers brass the wrong way throughout the season -- and was eventually told not to return to team facilities. Still, new general manager Tom Telesco is giving Gaither the benefit of the doubt -- for now -- and maintains that no move is imminent regarding Gaither, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Gaither would cost the Chargers a $6 million cap hit even if they released him -- but that figure won’t necessarily stop the Chargers from parting ways with Gaither. Telesco had hoped to sit down and meet with Gaither face-to-face, but the two had to settle for a phone call, as Gaither was out of town.

Despite being told not to return to San Diego’s facilities after being placed on injured reserve last year, Gaither is being given a chance -- at least by Telesco and the new Chargers regime.

Gaither signed a four-year contract with San Diego last offseason, worth $24.6 million. Gaither will earn $21.5 million over the final three years of the contract, beginning in 2013.
