Eric Wright contract: Bucs CB appealing voided $7.75 salary

Eric Wright and the Buccaneers are in a contract dispute over Wright’s 2013 base salary.

Jeff Griffith-US PRESSWIRE

Eric Wright was one of Tampa Bay's prize free agent acquisitions last season, but now less than a year later the two sides are in a dispute over Wright's 2013 contract.

When Wright singed his five-year $37.5 million contract, his 2013 base salary of $7.75 million was scheduled to be fully guaranteed. The Buccaneers, however, exercised a clause in the contract to void the guarantee after Wright was suspended for four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

The Buccaneers are widely expected to release Wright prior to the start of off-season workouts and according to Pewter Report Wright has filed grievance against the team. A clause which voids guarantees in the event of a suspension is not uncommon in the NFL according to ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas. The basis of Wright’s appeal remains largely unknown and Yasinskas, for one, doesn’t expect him to win.

If Wright loses his appeal and is in fact released, the move will cost him $7.75 million. Wright’s contract with Tampa Bay came with $15 million guaranteed, half of which was yet to be paid at the time of the suspension.
