Dolphins rumors: Sean Smith, Jake Long Miami return not ruled out

The Miami Dolphins have plenty of cap room and a number of free agents. Many predict Jake Long and Sean Smith will be among those headed out of town, but could the Dolphins still be in the mix to retain both?

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Miami free agents Sean Smith and Jake Long are each expected to have multiple suitors on the free agent market, but a return to the Dolphins could still be an option for both, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

Smith is considered to be one of the top cornerbacks on the free agent market and, according to Salguero, Smith’s agent has already had contact with multiple teams. Long’s recent injury history may cause some teams to shy away, but he is still expected to draw interest on the open market with Chicago and St. Louis among the teams possibly interested in the left tackle.

The Dolphins may be hesitant to get into a bidding war over either Long or Smith, but both could be options in Miami once they test the open market. Long is reportedly searching for a contract which pays him $11 million annually, but Salguero notes the Dolphins could be in play to retain Long if he is unable to find a team willing to meet his price.

Smith and Long have spent their entire careers with the Dolphins. Miami used the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft to select Long. Miami picked Smith in the second round the following season.
