Scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday, Arizona backup safety Rashad Johnson decided against testing the market and agreed to a three-year deal with Arizona, according to Kent Somers of AZCentral.

The Cardinals locked up one of their own free agents on Monday, signing safety Rashad Johnson to a three-year deal.

The 27-year-old Johnson played a backup role for the Cardinals last season, starting three games. He racked up 20 tackles and two interceptions in a limited role as a reserve safety. Johnson played a bigger role in 2011, starting nine games and finishing the year with 50 combined tackles. Johnson was at his best during the 2010 season where, according to Pro Football Focus, he compiled a plus-5.7 grade for the season.
After releasing Adrian Wilson earlier in the season, re-signing Johnson ensures the Cardinals won't have to undergo a bigger overhaul at safety. Johnson could slide into the starting lineup next season alongside Kerry Rhodes. Johnson has spent his entire career with the Cardinals after being selected in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft. In addition to his time at safety, Johnson has also been a special teams contributor for Arizona.
