Brent Grimes rumors: Buccaneers, Rams interested in Falcons cornerback

The St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have both shown interest in cornerback Brent Grimes.

Brent Grimes tore his Achilles in the first game of the 2012 season, but that isn't keeping teams away from the talented free agent cornerback. Both the St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have shown interest in Grimes according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Falcons used the franchise tag on Grimes last offseason, but didn't get much use out of their one-year contract as Grimes was placed on injured reserve after his Week 1 injury. Grimes is now two years removed from his 2010 Pro Bowl season, but if he stays healthy, there is no reason to believe that the 29-year-old can't return to his previous form.

Grimes worked his way up from an undrafted free agent and NFL Europe player to special teams player to one of the top corners in the league with Atlanta. He is believed to be progressing nicely in his rehab and should be 100% healthy come the start of the 2013 season, but is still expected to find a new home this year. Grimes is still considered the top free agent cornerback on the market.

The Rams had a solid pass defense in 2012 led by their secondary which featured rookie Janoris Jenkins and veteran Cortland Finnegan. The addition of Grimes would give St. Louis one of the top cornerback groups in the league. Tampa, meanwhile, finished dead last in the NFL in pass defense and is in desperate need of secondary help.
