Phil Loadholt, Vikings agree to extension, according to report

The Vikings secured their biggest free agent just a few minutes ahead of the start of NFL free agency.

Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE

The Minnesota Vikings agreed to a multi-year contract with right tackle Phil Loadholt, just a few minutes before Loadholt was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, according to Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.

Loadholt was scheduled to be one of the top right tackles on the market and was expected to draw interest from several teams, including the rival Chicago Bears. Re-signing Loadholt was thought to be Minnesota's biggest free agent priority and they were able to get a deal done just prior to the deadline.

Details of the deal are still unknown, but Loadholt's return should be a big boost for the Vikings' offense next season. He played an integral role along the offensive line, blocking for Adrian Peterson. Loadholt, along with Sebastian Vollmer and Andre Smith, were considered to be among the best free agent right tackles available.

The 27-year-old Loadholt has spent his entire career with the Vikings after Minnesota selected him in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Loadholt has started 63 of 64 possible games during his career.
