Seahawks rumors: Matt Flynn might not be traded

The Seattle Seahawks may opt to hang onto Matt Flynn instead of trading him, according to Ian Rapoport.

USA TODAY Sports

Last offseason, the Seattle Seahawks signed Matt Flynn, expecting Flynn to start the season as Seattle's staring quarterback. Russell Wilson eventually beat out Flynn for the starting gig, rendering Flynn as a backup quarterback -- again. This offseason, it was expected that the Seahawks would trade Flynn, but according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the Seahawks may just hold onto him.

Rapoport notes that the Seahawks are “more than fine” having Flynn as the backup quarterback -- and why wouldn’t they be? Flynn has a base salary of $5.25 million in 2013, and counts as $7.25 million toward the cap -- thanks to Flynn’s $6 million signing bonus being spread over three years.

Though the price tag might be high for a backup quarterback, Wilson will only make $681,085 in 2013, making the overall cap hit on the quarterback position quite reasonable.

Flynn proved to be a capable backup quarterback in Green Bay, serving as Aaron Rodgers' backup, prompting the Seahawks to invest in him as a free agent. It had been rumored that the Jets would be interested in Flynn, but the Jets opted to sign David Garrard as competition for Mark Sanchez.
