Heyward-Bey, the team’s first-round pick in the 2009 NFL draft, hasn’t quite lived up to his first-round status in his four years with the team. He has caught 140 passes for 2,071 yards and 11 touchdowns. The speedy receiver’s best season was in 2011, when he racked up 975 receiving yards and four touchdowns. 2013 would have been the last year of his contract as the Raiders would have owed him $7.721 million.
Huff, a former first-round pick from 2006, has played seven seasons with the Raiders. In that time he has made 438 tackles and intercepted 11 passes. Hey has played both safety and cornerback for the Raiders, proving his versatility. He would have been owed over $9 million for the 2013 season.
Releasing these three, especially Heyward-Bey and Huff, should free up some money for the Raiders to re-sign the players they need to and maybe sign a free agent or two heading into the 2013 season.
