Philip Wheeler signs with Dolphins, per report

According to league sources, the Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms with former Raiders linebacker Philip Wheller.

USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms, per league sources, with former Raiders and Colts linebacker Philip Wheeler, according to Pro Football Talk.

Wheeler, a third-round pick in the 2008 NFL draft out of Georgia Tech, originally signed with the Indianapolis Colts. After four seasons in Indianapolis, he signed with the Oakland Raiders for the 2012 season. In his five years in the league, he has made 329 tackles and five sacks as a strongside linebacker.

This is the second linebacker that the Dolphins have brought to Miami on the first day of free agency, as they also signed former Ravens linebacker Dannell Ellerbe earlier on Tuesday. The Dolphins also made waves by landing former Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace.

Both Ellerbe and Wheeler should help defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle improve the Dolphins defense, which was ranked No. 21 in the league in 2012, giving up an average of 356.8 yards per game throughout the regular season.
