Bears release tight end Kellen Davis

After signing free agent tight end Martellus Bennett, the Chicago Bears have released Kellen Davis.

USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears released tight end Kellen Davis on Wednesday, one day after signing free agent Martellus Bennett. The move was expected after Chicago brought in Bennett to be the new starter at the position.

Davis signed a two-year, $6 million contract prior to the 2012 season and was owed a base salary of $2.4 million in 2013. His release saves the Bears $2.5 million against the cap. Davis struggled last season after signing his new contract, only notching 19 receptions for 229 yards and two touchdowns as a full-time starter. Bennett meanwhile, caught 55 passes for 626 yards and five touchdowns with the Giants in 2012.

Drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Bears, Davis had been with Chicago for five years, becoming their starter in 2011. He leaves Chicago with 47 receptions for 529 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Steelers have already been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Davis now that he has become a free agent.
