NFL free agency rumors: Steelers interested in Kellen Davis

One team’s trash could be another team’s treasure, as the Steelers are reportedly interested in Kellen Davis after he was released by the Bears on Wednesday.

USA TODAY Sports

Tight end Kellen Davis was released by Chicago on Wednesday, but he may not be out of work for long, as he's already drawing interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

Davis was released by Chicago after the Bears signed Martellus Bennett on the first day of free agency. The 27-year-old is known to be a better blocker than receiver and could possibly fit in a backup role behind Heath Miller in Pittsburgh. He caught 19 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns last season, setting career highs for receptions and yards.

Davis was scheduled to earn a base salary of $2.4 million in 2013 and would likely garner less in a backup role. He spent the first five years of his career in Chicago after being selected in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. The Steelers are in the market for a backup tight end, as Leonard Pope is also a free agent.

While the Steelers are interested in Davis, they may have to make an additional move to sign him, as Pittsburgh has limited salary cap space available.
