Rashard Mendenhall signs 1-year contract with Arizona Cardinals

Rashard Mendenhall will reunite with Bruce Arians in Arizona after he agreed to deal with the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals signed free agent running back Rashard Mendenhall to a one-year contract on Wednesday, according to Mendenhall's agent Mike McCartney.

Mendenhall rushed for 182 yards during his final season in Pittsburgh and will now attempt to jump start his career with the Cardinals. A former first-round pick, Mendenhall has a history of success, including two 1,000-yard seasons. He tore his ACL at the end of the 2011 season which caused him to miss the first five games of last year. He went on to play six games in 2012 with four starts.

In Arizona, Mendenhall will replace Beanie Wells, who Arizona released earlier this month. As Tyler Nickel of Revenge of the Birds wrote, Mendenhall and Wells have a lot of similarities, including their extensive injury histories. The one-year deal will give Mendenhall an opportunity to revitalize his career then hit the free agent market again next offseason. He spent five years with the Steelers, but is just 25-years-old.

Mendenhall could be in line for the majority of the carries in Arizona next season. He is expected to compete with third-year running back Ryan Williams for the starting job. Arizona was rumored to be interested in free agent Reggie Bush, but Bush signed with Detroit on Wednesday.
