Panthers rumors: Carolina will keep Derek Anderson

Derek Anderson will stay with the Carolina Panthers and serve as Cam Newton’s backup quarterback, according to The Charlotte Observer.

Jeremy Brevard-US PRESSWIRE

Derek Anderson appears to be content in Carolina. Instead of leaving the Panthers for the Cleveland Browns, or another team in the league, Anderson will likely remain with the Panthers, according to The Charlotte Observer.

Anderson began his career in Cleveland, spending four seasons with the Browns, and underwhelming as Cleveland’s signal caller. Anderson started 34 games for the Browns, leading Cleveland to a 16-18 record in his starts. In his Cleveland career, Anderson threw for 7,083 yards, 46 touchdowns and 45 interceptions, while completing 52.8% of his passes.

After a failed year in Arizona in 2010, Anderson signed with the Panthers, where he spent the last two seasons backing up franchise quarterback Cam Newton.

Once Rod Chudzinski left Carolina to become Cleveland’s new head coach, speculation started that Anderson could follow his former offensive coordinator to Cleveland, where the quarterback position is a bit of an issue. Still, it appears that Anderson will forego a chance to compete for a starting position, and return to Carolina to backup Newton.
