Wes Welker reportedly close with Broncos; will Patriots match offer?

The Broncos’ offense is about to reach another level as it seems they’re close to reaching a deal with free agent wide receiver Wes Welker.

USA TODAY Sports

Free agent wide receiver Wes Welker is on the verge of coming to a deal with the Broncos that would send the former Patriots standout to Denver, according to Michael Silver, who calls the deal "almost done." But before Broncos fans start buying Welker jerseys, they should know that, according to Michael Giardi, Welker is going back to the Patriots to see if they'll match Denver's offer.

Welker, a former undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech, made his NFL debut with the San Diego Chargers in 2004. He was released after the first game of the season, though, and was signed by the Miami Dolphins, where he played for the next three years before making his way to the Patriots, where he became a household name.

Welker spent six seasons with the Patriots and had more than 1,000 yards receiving in five of those seasons. He has caught 768 passes for 8,580 yards and 38 touchdowns. Regardless of which team signs Welker, being paired with Tom Brady or Peyton Manning will make him tough for every defensive coordinator tasked with stopping him.

The Patriots have quite a bit more money than the Broncos do to spend in free agency, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll match a ridiculously high offer if that’s what Denver offered.
