NFL free agency: Jay Cutler pleased with Bears’ signings

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is excited about the changes on the team and the new offensive players that will surround him in 2013.

Jay Cuter may not be offered a contract extension in 2013, making him an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season, but he’s not getting too wrapped up in that detail. For now he is content to be excited for all the changes around him the Bears are making, ESPN Chicago reports:
“I look at it as the opportunity as a whole. Coach [Marc] Trestman coming in, Phil doing the best possible job to upgrade the entire team, offensively us getting better, a new system, I think there’s enough on my plate to kind of keep my mind occupied without having to worry about my deal.”

The signings of offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod and tight end Martellus Bennett are chief among the Bears' changes, giving Cutler fresh protection and possibly another target .

“Coach Trestman and his offense, I’m really excited about it, I think the guys will be really excited about it. Our approach to the offense and just the intensity we’re going to approach each and every day. We’re getting the pieces talent-wise around everybody. The defense is going to be really good once again and the special teams will be there as well. It’s all about getting hot in December and making a push into the playoffs. So we have to stay healthy and some things have to fall our way. But I think Phil and everyone involved is doing everything possible to put us in a position to be successful. ”

The Bears finished the 2012 season with a 10-6 record, but failed to make the playoffs after losing a few key games, resulting in former head coach Lovie Smith’s firing. The team’s defense led the way throughout the season while the offense lagged behind, finishing the year ranked at No. 28 in the league, averaging only 310.6 yards per game.

If the Bears are able to add more weapons around Cutler and boost the offense’s production so it matches that of the team’s defense, the Bears could become one of the scariest teams in the NFC.
