Vince Young, Raiders have ‘preliminary’ talks

The Oakland Raiders and free-agent quarterback Vince Young have had “preliminary” talks, per Pro Football Talk.

Vince Young and the Oakland Raiders have had "preliminary" talks about bringing the free-agent quarterback in for a workout, according to Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith.

Ian Rapoport, who originally reported on Young’s talks with the Raiders, cautioned fans that due to the fact that these are just preliminary talks, we shouldn’t expect to see the former Texas Longhorn in Silver and Black quite yet.

Young was the No. 3 overall pick out of Texas by the Tennessee Titans in 2006. Things didn't quite work out between the two as Young struggled to make the transition from college to professional football. In 2008, Young injured his knee early in the season and was replaced by veteran Kerry Collins. After Young was healthy enough to come back, head coach Jeff Fisher decided to stick with Collins, who led the team to a 13-3 regular-season record, keeping Young on the bench. Young eventually got playing time and started several games over the next two seasons, but struggled on the field. The Titans let him leave as a free agent following the 2010 season.

Young signed with the Eagles in 2011, but only played in six games. He then signed with the Bills before the 2012 season, but was released in August and sat out the rest of the year.

The Raiders have veteran Carson Palmer and inexperienced Terrelle Pryor on their roster at the quarterback position. If they sign Young, it will likely be for competition for for a backup role as he's not getting a lot, if any, attention from other teams around the league.

Palmer, who started all but one game in 2012, finished the season with over 4,000 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for an 85.4 passer rating. The Raiders finished the season, though, with a 4-12 record.
