Falcons’ Todd McClure officially announces retirement

After 14 seasons in Atlanta, Falcons center Todd McClure announced he is retiring.

A fixture in the Atlanta Falcons offensive line since 2000, center Todd McClure has announced he will retire. Rumors of his retirement had been swirling since the end of the season, but now it is official.

McClure, a seventh-round pick in the 1999 NFL Draft, started a total of 195 regular season games for the Falcons after missing his entire rookie year. Last offseason, amid rumors of retirement, McClure signed a one-year deal to return to Atlanta, but no such luck this year. Atlanta already received its delayed-retirement surprise this year, when Tony Gonzalez agreed to return in 2013.

With McClure retiring, Peter Konz will likely take over as starting center. Konz played right guard last season, but was drafted in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft as a center out of Wisconsin. Konz struggled as a rookie, but a year of experience and a switch back to his natural position could help him reach his potential.
