Dwan Edwards, Panthers make ‘no movement’ in contract negotiations

Defensive tackle Dwan Edwards and the Panthers have made no progress in negotiations since Carolina offered him a one-year deal last week.

The Carolina Panthers are no closer to re-signing defensive tackle Dwan Edwards than they were a week ago. The Panthers have offered Edwards a one-year contract reportedly worth $1.5 million, but Edwards said he has received a two-year offer from another team. For the Panthers to keep him, they will likely have to add another year or more money to their offer.

Last season Edwards totaled 52 tackles and six sacks in 14 games for the Panthers, who signed him to a one-year, $1.5 million deal after being cut by the Buffalo Bills. His six sacks were the most for a Panthers defensive tackle since 2002 and placed him second among all NFC defensive tackles for the season.

2012 marked the best season of Edwards' eight-year NFL career. Prior to 2012, he had not recorded more than 2.5 sacks in a single season. The Panthers finished tied for ninth in sacks last year with 39. Defensive ends Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy led the team with 12.5 and 11 sacks, respectively. Edwards had the third most on the team.
