Robert Griffin III injury: Redskins QB ‘way ahead’ of schedule

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is reportedly ahead of schedule in his recovery from reconstructive knee surgery -- and drew comparisons to Bo Jackson and Adrian Peterson.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is reportedly ahead of schedule in his recovery from reconstructive knee surgery, and was described as "superhuman," according to ESPN's Stephania Bell.

Griffin III originally sprained his right knee in Washington's Week 14 overtime win against the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens -- an injury that came as a relief to the Redskins and Redskins fans, as it appeared that the former Baylor quarterback suffered a major knee injury at the time.

However, Griffin III went on to suffer a major knee injury during Washington's Wild Card loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Visibly hurt, Griffin III's knee eventually buckled on a non-contact injury, resulting in torn knee ligaments.

Griffin III had surgery to repair his ACL and MCL in early January, putting his availability for the start of the 2013 season at risk. To his credit, Griffin III appears to be ahead of schedule, and looks as if he’s on track to start Washington’s Week 1 contest in September.

Dr. James Andrews compared Griffin III to Bo Jackson and Adrian Peterson with regards to his ability to recover from a major injury. Peterson suffered a torn ACL in Week 17 of the 2011 season, and returned in Week 1 of the 2012 season en route to winning the NFL's MVP award, and nearly breaking the single-season rushing yards record.

There’s a long way to go for RGIII before he’s back on the football field, but early signs are encouraging.
