Oakland Raiders will release DT Tommy Kelly, according to report

A long-time staple in the middle of the Raiders defense will be searching for a new place to play.

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Oakland Raiders will release defensive tackle Tommy Kelly on Wednesday, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. La Canfora also points out that there should be plenty of interest in Kelly once he is on the open market.

Silver and Black Pride: Kelly's cap number is too big

This move doesn’t come as a surprise, as Kelly himself expected to be released. The veteran has played nine seasons in the NFL, all in Oakland. His two best seasons, at least in terms of rushing the passer, came in 2010 and 2011. During that stretch he recorded 14.5 sacks and six passes defensed in 32 games.

Kelly’s production dropped off in 2012. The tackles were still there, but he tallied just 1.5 sacks. That was his lowest total since 2009, when he got to the quarterback just one time.

At 6’6, 325, Kelly still has the size to take up space and occupy blockers. That alone should be enough for him to find another place of employment in the NFL.
