NFL free agent tracker: Cardinals sign safety Jonathon Amaya

The Cardinals added a special teamer on Wednesday. How will that help them in April’s draft?

USA TODAY Sports

Former Miami Dolphins safety Jonathon Amaya has signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com. Amaya will be entering his fourth NFL season in 2013, and the Cardinals will be his third team in three years.

Amaya has been a special teams player thus far in his career. He appeared in 12 games for the Dolphins last season, tallying 10 total tackles. He has played a full 16 games just once. That came in 2010 with the New Orleans Saints when he recorded 14 tackles and a forced fumble.

This signing is part of strategy that will allow Arizona to avoid “need picks” in April’s draft, according to Jess Root of Cardinals blog Revenge of the Birds. Root points out that the front office wants the opportunity to draft the best player available, instead of reaching to fill a roster void. Amaya is another example of that. The Cardinals don’t need to look for a specific special-teamer in the late rounds, but can just find the player they want.
