Browns won’t release Colt McCoy, could trade quarterback, Joe Banner says

The Browns CEO says the team won’t be releasing Colt McCoy, but would be willing to trade the former quarterback of the future.

The Cleveland Browns won't release Colt McCoy but are open to trading the quarterback, according to CEO Joe Banner (via ESPN Cleveland's Will Burge).

Rumors surfaced on Wednesday that the Browns would release McCoy if they could not trade him, but Banner ruled that out for the time being.

The Browns picked McCoy in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft and he showed promise as a rookie, but lost out to Brandon Weeden in training camp last season. With Cleveland adding Jason Campbell on Tuesday, it seems likely McCoy will fall to third string on the Browns roster.

While McCoy won’t get any starting job offers, several teams are looking for a backup and could do worse than the 26-year-old.

Banner said the Browns wouldn’t release McCoy, but added the caveat “as of now.” This could be a simple ploy to make quarterback-needy teams more likely to offer something in exchange for McCoy. He is owed $2.51 million in 2013, and the Browns would save almost all of that money by cutting him.
