Aaron Rodgers, Packers continue working on long-term contract extension, according to report

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers could become the highest-paid player in NFL history

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Joe Flacco's run as the richest player in the NFL may be very short, as the Packers and Aaron Rodgers are working on an extension to make Rodgers the highest-paid player in the NFL history, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Rodgers, 29, has been perhaps the best quarterback in the league over the last three years. In 2010 he lead the Packers to the Lombardi Trophy, winning Super Bowl MVP honors. In 2011 he was the league MVP, posting the highest single-season passer rating of all-time at 122.5. In 2012 he led the league in rating again at 108.0, and threw for 4,295 yards, 39 touchdowns and only eight interceptions.

Behind Rodgers, the Packers have made the playoffs four-straight seasons with a pass-heavy attack. Over that time Rodgers has taken a lot of damage, twice being the most sacked QB in the league, yet he remains durable as well, only missing two games. Green Bay is now looking to reward him with a massive deal.

Rodgers signed a six-year, $65 million deal in 2008 that is set to pay him $9.25 million in 2013, putting him far below his value when compared to other quarterbacks. This offseason, the Ravens signed Flacco to a six-year, $120.6 million contract; numbers Rodgers will eclipse whenever he signs his next contract.
