William Gay visits Pittsburgh Steelers

Free agent cornerback William Gay is scheduled to visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, just days after being released by the Arizona Cardinals. Gay was originally drafted by the Steelers in 2007.

USA TODAY Sports

Free agent cornerback William Gay is scheduled to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday -- the same team that drafted Gay into the NFL in 2007 -- according to an NFL.com report.

Gay was released by the Arizona Cardinals late last week, in a move that saved Arizona more than $3 million in cap space for the 2013 season. Gay signed with Arizona in March 2012, agreeing to a two-year deal worth just under $5 million. Gay, however, struggled in 2012, and eventually was cut by Arizona's new regime.

During his time with the Steelers, Gay went to two Super Bowls, and was apart of Pittsburgh's Super Bowl XLIII championship team. Gay appeared in 80 games with Pittsburgh between 2007-11, making 37 starts, but only recorded three interceptions.

A contract between the Steelers and Gay could be imminent. Gay tweeted on Sunday night that he’s “glad he didn’t sell his condo in Pittsburgh,“ and replied ”yea” when asked by a fan if he’s coming back.

According to Pro Football Focus, Gay graded out as one of the NFL’s worst cornerbacks in 2012. Still only 28 years old, Gay should be able to rebound from a poor season -- and it appears that his former coach Mike Tomlin is willing to take a chance on him.
