NFL free agency rumors: Buccaneers DT Roy Miller to test market

The Bucs won’t be signing their starting defensive tackle before free agency hits.

USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won't be re-signing defensive tackle Roy Miller before the NFL's free agency period begins on March 12, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Miller has spent his first four seasons of his career with Tampa Bay, and started 14 games in 2012.

In those 2012 starts, Miller tallied 24 tackles and a pass defensed. Both numbers were career-lows for the 6’2, 310 tackle. However, he did help anchor a line that finished third in Football Outsiders’ rushing DVOA. That was an improvement over 30th in 2011, when Miller started just three times. Miller has appeared in 62 games with 32 starts since coming out of Texas in 2009.

In traditional stats, Tampa Bay led the NFL in yards per carry allowed, giving up just 3.5 per rush. The Bucs were also tops in yards per game allowed.

Miller could still return to the Buccaneers, but they will now have to compete on the open market.
