Michael Jenkins released by Vikings, according to report

The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly released Michael Jenkins after two seasons with the team, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Michael Jenkins' tenure as a member of the Minnesota Vikings has reportedly come to an end. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Vikings released Jenkins on Monday, days before having to pay Jenkins a roster bonus.

Minnesota signed Jenkins to a three-year contract worth $8.75 million prior to the 2011 season. Jenkins did not prove to be a difference-maker with Minnesota. Jenkins appeared in 27 games during his two seasons with Minnesota -- starting 15 of them -- and caught just 78 passes for 915 yards and five touchdowns.

Had the Vikings retained Jenkins, they would have been forced to pay a roster bonus worth nearly $2.5 million.

Jenkins was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft, with the No. 29 overall pick. Jenkins spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Falcons, before signing a three-year pact with the Vikings in 2011.

Now a free agent, Jenkins will likely have to settle for a modest, incentive-laden deal. Then nine-year veteran will turn 31 in June.
