Carolina Panthers will receive no state funding for stadium upgrades

Just days after another funding plan fell through, the state said no to the Panthers.

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers asked the state for $65.2 million for stadium renovations, but it doesn't look like they will even get a dime.

Gov. Pat McCrory said Monday “no state money would be available” to the team, according to Jim Morrill of the Charlette Observer.

The Panthers have a $250 million renovation planned for Bank of America Stadium:

“We don’t have the money in the state to address that issue,” McCrory told the Observer Monday. “I have never been actually asked for the $62 million, nor do we have it.”

It’s been an up-and-down adventure for the Panthers’ owners in trying to secure the money to renovate the stadium. The team was supposed to receive $125 million from City Council, which was a big boost in the right direction. But just four days ago legislators turned down that plan, which would have doubled its prepared food and beverage tax to 2 percent.

There’s a new idea in place, according to Morrill, that would use existing local taxes to help fund the Panthers’ renovations.

Stadium renovation plans, as of now, include escalators to the upper deck and new video boards.
