Raiders TE Brandon Myers expects to become free agent

Myers led the Raiders in receptions and yards last season, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be back with the team in 2013.

USA TODAY Sports

Oakland Raiders tight end Brandon Myers said Monday he'd like to be back with the team, but it's "not looking like that right now," according to Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times.

It looks like Myers will become an unrestricted free agent once March 12 comes around:

“Obviously, I’d like to stay,” Myers said by phone Monday night. “I’ve got a lot of friendships and know the coaches really well. They took a chance on me when I got drafted. I’d like to be there but it’s not looking like that right now. I guess I just have to stay patient and figure some stuff out. We’re pretty confident I’ll have a job here in a couple of weeks, but I’ll just try to sit back and not stress about it.”

His free agency comes on the heels of his best NFL season to date. The fourth-year man out of Iowa caught 79 passes for 806 yards and four touchdowns. He played in all 16 games and started 15 of those.

Myers really broke out in 2012 considering what he did in his first three seasons in the league. The sixth-round draft pick caught a combined 32 passes in his first three seasons and never had a touchdown. But he found a connection with quarterback Carson Palmer in 2012, catching more passes and tallying more yards than any other receiver on the team.

Silver and Black Pride listed Myers as a “moderate priority” for free agency:

He is coming off a great season. A surprising season. But he still struggles in blocking and should not be relied upon as the number one option. The Raiders need to bring in another tight end and/or figure out what they have in David Ausberry.

Myers proved he’s capable of being a No. 1 receiving tight end, so he should get some offers in free agency. However, if his blocking doesn’t improve, teams might lean elsewhere to someone who is more balanced.
