Brandon Weeden works with Chris Weinke in NFL offseason

The former pitcher-turned-quarterback is helping the latest NFL player do the same.

USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden reached out to former NFL quarterback Chris Weinke recently to "work on some things," according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Like Weeden, Weinke ditched professional baseball for college football and the NFL. Weinke reached Triple-A with the Toronto Blue Jays before winning the Heisman at Florida State. Weeden was with the New York Yankees before he went to Oklahoma State and was a first-round draft pick in 2012.

The two have spoken before, but Weeden specifically seeked out Weinke when he was in Florida for Seneca Wallace's wedding:

"I'm very impressed with Brandon," said Weinke, who was drafted by the Panthers in the fourth round in 2001 and spent all but is first year as a backup. "In the short time I've worked with him, he's an impressive guy and he has a huge upside."

"He's got a special arm," he said. "He spins it naturally, he has great velocity on the football and it's really effortless. He's got a good natural stroke and I'm quite impressed with his arm strength."

Weinke said he’s focusing on footwork with Weeden and “trying to create a sense of urgency within his feet.”

Weeden was the Browns’ starting quarterback in 2012, but his future is in doubt with new head coach Rob Chudzinski on board. Weeden said last week he expects to be the starter next season, but he knows there will be competition for the job.

Weeden had a rocky first year as an NFL quarterback, leading the Browns to a 5-10 record in 15 starts. He completed 57 percent of his passes for 3,385 yards and 14 touchdowns. He had 17 interceptions and was sacked 28 times.
