NFL announces new tampering rules for free agency

NFL teams will be allowed to negotiate with agents this weekend, but there will be some ground rules.

The NFL implements a new three-day negotiating window for free agents this weekend, and the league has released a new set of rules for that time, according to Greg A. Bedard of Boston.com. Perhaps the most important of those is the actual time period for the window, which is set to begin at midnight ET on Saturday and end at 3:59 p.m. on Tuesday.

During that time, no actual contracts can be signed. Instead, teams can work with agents on specifics that can be made official at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Agents are important in this time period, as contact with players on other teams is still disallowed. Any negotiation with representatives of restricted or franchised players is also forbidden.

As Bedard points out, Ed Reed won't be able to negotiate at all during this time. He is one of the few players that elects to broker his own deals without the aid of an agent.

After the three-day period ends, teams will be able to schedule visits from prospective free agent acquisitions.
