NFL news roundup: Nnamdi Asomugha’s uncertain future, London Fletcher returning and more from Roger Goodell

Player movement continues to be the main story in the NFL as teams prepare for the start of free agency in less than a week. Several players were released on Wednesday, and at one point, Nnamdi Asomugha was thought to be among the group. It turned out his wasn't ... at least for now.

Howard Eskin of Fox reported Asomugha would be released on Wednesday. That report, however, was disputed by the team shortly after and as of now, Asomugha remains an Eagle. Asomugha could still be released in the coming days, or the Eagles could trade him in a similar deal to the one that sent Asante Samuel out of Philadelphia last season. Like Asomugha, Elvis Dumervil's future with his current team is in question. Dumervil is owed $12 million next season and the Broncos have been reportedly working to renegotiate his contract. If the two sides are unable to agree to a new deal, the Broncos may release Dumervil. Dumervil racked up 37.5 sacks over the last three seasons, but could still be expendable at his current price tag.

Dumervil and Asomugha avoided being released for now, but several other players were not as lucky on Wednesday. In somewhat of a surprise move, the Chiefs released starting right tackle Eric Winston on Wednesday, less than a year after signing him to a four-year contract worth $22 million. The move cost Kansas City $3 million in dead money, but will save the Chiefs $3.5 million against the 2013 salary cap. Winston's release also opens up a tackle spot should the Chiefs decide to take Luke Joeckel or another offensive lineman with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 draft.

In less of a surprise, the 49ers released kicker David Akers on Wednesday. The move had been speculated for months as Akers struggled mightily this season. He converted just 69 percent of his field goal attempts in 2012, the lowest percentage of his career in any season with more than six attempts. As David Fucillo of Niners Nation wrote, the 49ers cleared more than $3 million in salary cap space with the move.

Following his 15th NFL season, London Fletcher was unsure of his future. He said he wanted to take some time to decide if he wanted to return and was still unsure in February. Now, it looks like Fletcher has made up his mind and will return for a 16th NFL season. The 37-year-old Fletcher is scheduled to have two surgical procedures done in an effort to return healthy next season. Fletcher has remained productive and will now anchor the Redskins defense for at least one more season.

Teams are in the final stages of tweaking their free agent plans before the flood gates open on March 12, but we now know signing a quarterback to compete for the starting job will not be in Minnesota's plans. While the Vikings plan to add a backup quarterback, head coach Leslie Frazier said there will be no quarterback competition in Minnesota and instead the team will search for a player willing to accept a backup role. Whether it's a good thing remains to be scene, but barring injury, Christian Ponder will be the Vikings' starting quarterback in 2013.
