Kenny Phillips spurns Giants’ contract offer, prepares for free agency, according to report

Kenny Phillips rejected New York’s latest contract offer, and is poised to test the free agent market for the first time in his career.

New York Giants safety Kenny Phillips will test the free agent market when free agency opens on Mar. 12. Phillips rejected New York's latest contract offer, according to the New York Daily News, and will instead gauge his value when other teams bid on his services in the coming week.

Phillips was limited to just seven games in 2012 because of a sprained MCL. 2012 marked the second time in Phillips’ five-year professional career that he’s missed the majority of the season. In 2009, his sophomore season, Phillips appeared in just two games before being placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. Phillips underwent microfracture surgery on his knee, and returned for the start of the 2010 season.

New York selected Phillips in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft, with the No. 31 pick, out of the University of Miami.

Phillips is an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. Despite his previous knee injuries, Phillips should attract suitors on the open market -- and appears unlikely to be back with the Giants in 2013.
