Cardinals release John Skelton, per report

The Cardinals released John Skelton on Monday, could they be paving the way for a potential Carson Palmer trade?

Christian Petersen

The Arizona Cardinals released quarterback John Skelton on Monday, according to a report from Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com.

Skelton's release could be another sign the Cardinals are close to acquiring Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer. The Cardinals and Raiders are reportedly on the verge of completing a deal, but nothing has been finalized yet. Skelton opened last season as the Cardinals starting quarterback after winning a training camp battle with Kevin Kolb. Skelton was injured, however, in the season opener and would go on to lose his starting job. He would regain it later in the season, but struggled and was replaced again. He finished the season with two touchdown passes and nine interceptions while averaging 5.6 yards per attempt. He's completed 53.2 percent of his passes during his career.

A fifth round pick out of Fordham, Skelton spent three seasons with the Cardinals, starting 17 games. With Arizona close to acquiring Palmer and having already signed Drew Stanton and Brian Hoyer this offseason, Skelton proved to be the odd man out. The 25-year-old Skelton should land with another team this offseason. Instead of being in a training camp competition to be the starter, he may find himself in a training camp competition to make a roster.
