NFL Draft 2013: Denver Broncos expected to take running back early

The Broncos are just a step or two away from having a Super Bowl-caliber team. Finding a new running back is one of those steps.

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos are expected to use one of their picks in one of the first three rounds of the upcoming draft on a new running back, according to the Denver Post's Mike Klis.

The Broncos have both Willis McGahee and Knowshon Moreno under contract for the 2013 and 2014 season, but they're looking for a bigger back that can help carry the load and push the team's rushing offense into the same elite tier their passing offense is in. In 2012, the Broncos' rushing offense ranked 16th in the league, averaging 114.5 yards per game.

According to Klis, the Broncos are looking for a bigger back and may be interested in Alabama’s Eddie Lacy, Stanford’s Stepfan Taylor, Arkansas’ Knile Davis, Michigan State’s Le’Veon Bell, among others. Klis also believes that the Broncos have a 33-percent chance of using their first-round pick on a running back, a 66-percent chance in the second round and a 99-percent chance of selecting a running back by the third round.

The 2013 class of running backs is deep and talented and also very versatile. For every bruising back, there’s a change-of-pace back. Most analysts believe that, while there are talented running backs, there may not be one worth a first-round pick. However, there are plenty that could be selected in the first three rounds.
