Peyton Manning works out with Wes Welker at Duke

Peyton Manning had his first practice session with his newest target, Wes Welker, on Wednesday at Duke University.

Peyton Manning and Wes Welker have begun to work out together for the first time as Denver Broncos teammates. Welker joined Manning along with Broncos receivers Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker at Duke University, where Manning rehabbed last year after undergoing neck surgery.

Welker and Manning have been teammates on multiple Pro Bowl teams, but they had their first practice session together as real teammates on Wednesday. Welker signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Broncos this offseason after spending the last six seasons with the New England Patriots.

Manning said he is already making a connection with his newest receiver, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. “There’s certain guys you just feel like you have timing with right away,” Manning said. If Manning and Welker establish a connection like the one Welker shared with Tom Brady in New England, defenses across the NFL should fear a Denver offense that scored the second-most points in the league last season.

Manning is working at Duke along with his brother Eli and Duke coach David Cutcliffe, who coached both Manning brothers in college. Cutcliffe was Peyton’s offensive coordinator at Tennessee and Eli’s head coach at Ole Miss. Official offseason workouts begin next week, but the Mannings have gotten off to a head start.
