Amari Spievey expects assault charges to be dismissed, says attorney

Detroit Lions safety Amari Spievey expects assault charges stemming from a March incident in Connecticut to be dropped.

Detroit Lions safety Amari Spievey was arrested in Middletown, Conn., in late March and was charged with third-degree assault, disorderly conduct and risk of injury to a child. Spievey and his attorney expect the charges to be dropped, after Spievey agreed to enroll in a family violence education program, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Spievey was originally due in court on Thursday, but a Middletown Superior Court clerk said that the case was continued until June 28.

Spievey and Lisa Marie Santos, the mother of his two-year-old daughter, were involved in the dispute. Santos was also arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and risk of injury to a child. The two were involved in an altercation stemming from an argument regarding child support. At one point, Spievey told their daughter “not to be like her mother,“ which likely escalated the argument.

Detroit re-signed Spievey to a one-year contract in March. Spievey is expected to compete for a backup safety role, behind Louis Delmas and Glover Quin. Spievey appeared in just five games in 2012 and recorded 21 tackles without forcing a turnover.
