Chiefs unable to find trade partner for Branden Albert, according to Peter King

The Kansas City Chiefs have been unable to find a trade partner for Branden Albert, and with the 2013 NFL Draft fast approaching, the Chiefs might have to drop Albert’s price tag.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to take Texas A&M tackle Luke Joeckel with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft in just under two weeks, and consequently, are shopping franchise-tagged tackle Branden Albert. Despite Kansas City's attempts, they haven't found any takers for Albert yet, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King.

King notes that the Chiefs would accept a high second-round pick in exchange for Albert, but so far, have had no luck finding a trade partner.

Albert went on “NFL AM” in early April and said that he’s unwilling to move to right tackle. With Kansas City expected to draft Joeckel, a left tackle, with the first pick in the draft, Albert would then become a very expensive backup lineman.

Unless Albert receives a long-term contract, he will earn $9.8 million in 2013 under the franchise tag. It’s likely that Albert will receive an extension if he’s traded, since no team in the league wants to surrender a draft pick for a one-year rental.

Miami and San Diego are rumored destinations for Albert. The Dolphins lost Jake Long through free agency to the St. Louis Rams while the Chargers cut ties with Jared Gaither late in March.

If Kansas City reduces its price on Albert, then teams will likely be more receptive to the idea of trading for the franchise-tagged left tackle.
