Randy Starks wants long-term deal with Dolphins, will sit out offseason program

Hoping for a long-term contract, Miami’s franchise player, defensive tackle Randy Starks, will sit out the Dolphins’ voluntary offseason conditioning program.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Randy Starks will not attend the team's voluntary offseason conditioning program as he hopes to sign a long-term contract with the team according to Ian Rapoport. Starks signed his franchise tender earlier this offseason, guaranteeing him $8.45 million for the 2013 season, but he would like to ink a long-term deal if possible.

Starks, 29, will attend the team's mandatory minicamp events, but will not participate in any of the voluntary workouts without a new multi-year contract. The 6'3, 305-pound defensive tackle made the Pro Bowl as an alternate in 2012 with 27 tackles, 4.5 sacks, four passes defended and one interception. Starks anchors the Dolphins run defense along with fellow defensive tackle Paul Soliai. Starks also made the Pro Bowl as a member of the Dolphins in 2010.

Sitting out voluntary workouts is a common negotiating tactic for players looking for new contracts or extensions. As long as Starks shows up for the mandatory minicamp, this move should not turn any heads.
