Kevin Williams restructures contract for Vikings, will become FA in 2014

Minnesota has renegotiated the contract of defensive tackle Kevin Williams, saving themselves $2.5 million in cap space, but making him a free agent at the end of the season.

Bruce Kluckhohn-US PRESSWIRE

Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams agreed to a restructured contract that saves the Vikings $2.5 million in salary cap space for the 2013 season. Williams salary will move from a non-guaranteed $7.5 million to a guaranteed $4.9 million and he will now become an unrestricted free agent following the season. Prior to the restructure, Williams was due to make a non-guaranteed $7.5 million in 2014 as well.

Williams, who has spent 10 season with the Vikings and turns 33 in August, is not the player he once was, but is still a valuable contributor on the Vikings defensive line. The six-time Pro Bowl selection totaled 30 tackles, two sacks, and seven passes deflections in 2012 and eats up blockers to allow other Vikings defenders to make plays.

With Williams' restructured contract the Vikings are now $6.913 million under the adjusted salary cap. Next offseason Williams will join the rest of the Vikings starting defensive line including Jared Allen, Brian Robison, and Everson Griffen in becoming unrestricted free agents.
