Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne split starting quarterback reps for Jaguars

Chad Henne and Blaine Gabbert split first-team reps at quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley had quarterbacks Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne split first-team reps during Jacksonville's spring practice, according to Vito Stellino.

Once viewed as Jacksonville’s franchise quarterback, Gabbert has stumbled in the early part of his NFL career, and now he finds himself fighting for the starting job. In two seasons with the Jaguars, Gabbert has completed just 53.8 percent of his passes for 3,876 yards, 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Gabbert has also fumbled nine times in 25 games.

Jacksonville holds the No. 2 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, and the Jaguars been linked to a number of players -- including West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. With a new front office and coaching staff in place, Jacksonville could opt to select a new quarterback to lead the Jaguars and become the face of the franchise.

With no allegiance to neither Henne nor Gabbert, Gus Bradley and Jacksonville’s coaching staff will likely hold an honest quarterback competition between the two.

Henne appeared in 10 games for the Jaguars last season, his first with Jacksonville. Henne completed 53.9 percent of his passes for 2,084 yards, 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He lacks upside and is better suited for a backup role.

The Jaguars selected Gabbert with the No. 10 pick of the 2011 NFL Draft, and he did not have the opportunity to go through a full offseason during his rookie season because of the NFL lockout. Since then, Gabbert has failed to impress analysts and coaching staffs and is now clinging to his starting job in Jacksonville.
