Redskins vs. Eagles to open Monday Night Football, according to Adam Carriker

According to one of the players, Monday Night Football will open with an NFC East duel.

Brad Mills-US PRESSWIRE

The Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles will play in the first Monday Night Football game of the season on Monday, Sept. 9, according to Redskins defensive end Adam Carriker. The 2013 NFL regular season schedule will be officially released on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET, but Carriker tweeted that the Redskins will open against the Eagles from the Twitter account of his radio show, 4th and Pain.

The matchup between the Redskins and Eagles will be highly anticipated and should draw a large television audience. Fans will be eager to see if Robert Griffin III is ready to start the season and how he plays coming off reconstructive knee surgery. RG3 tore his ACL and LCL in the Redskins' playoff game against the Seahawks, but has been rehabbing aggressively with the goal of being ready for Week 1.

It will also mark the first NFL regular season game for new Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. The former Oregon coach accepted an offer from the Eagles in January and has since been retooling the Philadelphia roster to fit his system. Last season the Redskins swept the Eagles with Nick Foles serving as the Philadelphia quarterback in both games. It is unknown if Foles will win the starting job under Kelly or if the title will be returned to Michael Vick.

While the schedule still won’t be official until 8 p.m., leaks are likely to come out through the day.

UPDATE: Carriker’s tweet was later deleted.
