Branden Albert will ‘stay away’ from Chiefs without long-term answers

Kansas City offensive tackle Branden Albert skipped voluntary workouts on Monday and won’t be reporting to the Chiefs until he knows his long-term status.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Branden Albert is staying away from the Kansas City Chiefs until he has answers about his long-term future. The Chiefs used their franchise tag on the offensive tackle this offseason, signing him to a one-year, $9.828 million franchise tender, but he skipped the first day of voluntary workouts on Monday.

In an appearance on NFL AM, Albert said, "Until I know my situation with certainty, I'm going to stay away." By all indications, he will not show up for any of the voluntary offseason workouts with the Chiefs until he gets some answers.

Albert is concerned with the lack of security he has with a one-year contract and would like to reach a long-term deal. He is also unsure if the Chiefs will trade him before the season starts or draft a left tackle with the first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, forcing him to move to right tackle, which he does not want to do. Albert hasn’t thought ahead to his plan once mandatory workouts begin, but for the time being he’s avoiding Kansas City.
