Lions draft rumors: Detroit could trade up for Lane Johnson

There is always at least one trade in the first round of the NFL draft, and this year is no exception. The Lions may be the first team to move up, according to reports.

The Detroit Lions are reportedly looking to move up in the draft to select Oklahoma offensive tackle Lane Johnson, and the Raiders seem to be willing to move back for more picks, according to Draft Insider.

I continue to hear the Oakland Raiders want to move from the third slot in the draft. The player everyone wants at that pick is Lane Johnson. Sources tell me there's still a good chance Oakland flips with the Detroit Lions.

The Lions need help to make sure Matthew Stafford is protected in the pocket and to help open holes for recently signed running back Reggie Bush. However, even sitting at the No. 5 position wouldn't be high enough to select Johnson. The top two offensive tackles, Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel, are expected to be taken off the board with the first two picks by the Chiefs and Jaguars. Since Johnson is wanted by several teams, the Raiders are in good position to gain some extra picks by trading back.

Johnson is an athletic tackle who played quarterback in high school and tight end and defensive end in college before hitting his stride at offensive tackle. He isn’t the most powerful blocker in this year’s draft class, but he has good technique and shows the ability to start right away at left tackle in the NFL.
