Browns draft rumors: Cleveland will not trade up to No. 3, per report

The Cleveland Browns will not be trading up to No. 3 from No. 6 to select Geno Smith, according to reports.

USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns will not be trading up from the No. 6 spot in Thursday night's first round of the NFL Draft to No. 3, according to Pro Football Talk, who cited a source with direct knowledge of the team's plans.

The Browns had been thought to want to trade up to the No. 3 pick, which belongs to the Raiders, to select West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, who is considered the best quarterback in this year's draft class. The Browns used the No. 22 pick in the 2012 draft to select Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden, who started 15 of the team's games his rookie season. He finished the year with 3,385 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions for a passer rating of 72.6. He led the Browns to a disappointing record of 5-11.

Unlike the previous two seasons, the 2013 quarterback class is not a strong one. Several analysts believe that there isn’t a single quarterback worthy of a first-round choice, though there are enough quarterback-needy teams that one of them is likely to take a chance on Smith on Thursday. If the Browns want to use their first-round pick on a quarterback for the second year in a row, they probably don’t need to trade up from No. 6 to do it.
