NFL Draft results 2013: Johnathan Hankins selected by Giants with pick No. 49
The Giants selected the New York Giants with their second round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Hankins decided to come out a year early, forgoing his senior season, to enter the NFL as a junior. He finished the 2012 season named as a second-team All-American. Overall, Hankins played in 38 games for the Buckeyes. He started 13 games in 2011 and all 12 in 2012 when Ohio State went undefeated through the regular season. He finished his college career with 138 tackles, including 16.5 tackles for loss and five sacks.
The Giants finished the 2012 season with the No. 31 defense in the league and struggled against both the pass and the run. Following the season, the team released defensive tackle Chris Canty, leaving a void that Hankins would be the logical man to step into.
In a prospect profile on SB Nation, the following were listed as positives for Hankins:
- Hankins is a versatile lineman who has the athleticism to line up over center, at three-technique and at five-technique, according to Dan Kadar’s scouting report. Hankins disrupts the offense’s ground game with his ability to take away one side of the field in a sense.
- Kadar also notes Hankins’ athleticism, mentioning Ohio State’s willingness to drop Hankins back in coverage during his junior season. Hankins also has the burst to close on ball carriers and play a sideline-to-sideline game.
- Among his best traits is Hankins’ ability to command double teams on the inside. The space-eating defensive tackle was consistently asked to take up more than one blocker on the inside.

Height: 6’3
Weight: 320 lbs.
Hand size: 9.5 inches
40-yard dash: 5.31 seconds
Vertical jump: 26 inches
Hankins has the potential to be one of the tougher defensive tackles to handle. He’s a load for blockers to move around and he displays a very quick first couple steps for someone his size. He not only played inside at tackle but he played at times as a defensive end. If he’s used in a rotation to keep him fresh, Hankins could be a force to be reckoned with.
