2013 NFL Draft results: Ryan Nassib selected by Giants with 110th pick

Ryan Nassib was selected by the Giants in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. After getting passed over in the first round, he will have a chip on his shoulder to prove he is a worthy starting quarterback in the NFL.

The New York Giants have selected Syracuse Orange quarterback Ryan Nassib with the 110th pick in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Nassib is rated as the No. 95 overall prospect on the pre-draft rankings by SB Nation's Dan Kadar, and ranks as the sixth-best quarterback in this draft class.

Nassib was a three-year starter at Syracuse, and was part of a group of players that helped restore the Orange program to respectability. Syracuse made it to two bowl games in three years with Nassib under center, an accomplishment that hadn’t been done there in over a decade prior.

Nassib greatly increased his production in 2012 compared to prior years, throwing for 3,753 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while completing over 62 percent of his passes. In his previous two seasons as a starter, Nassib had never eclipsed the 2,700-yard mark. He helped guide the Orange to an 8-5 record and a share of the Big East title, as well as a win in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Nassib’s late emergence helped raise his draft stock considerably. He impressed scouts during Senior Bowl practices, and became a dark horse candidate to be the first quarterback selected Thursday. Many pegged Nassib to go No. 8 overall to the Buffalo Bills, where former Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone has taken over.

The Bills took Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel instead, after trading down to No. 16 with the St. Louis Rams. Nassib was one of several potentially elite arms to drop, along with Geno Smith and Matt Barkley. Fans were disappointed, and no doubt so was Nassib. That said, he will still get his shot to impress in the NFL.

Nassib is thick, and has a strong arm. He is very accurate when gets in a rhythm and sets his feet. Nassib is confident in his ability, occasionally to a fault. He has a tendency to force throws at times. He will also need to learn how keep his wits when pressure comes. With some more development, however, he has the potential to be a star in the NFL.

Nassib doesn’t necessarily fit as need for the Giants, but he should be a longterm back up for Eli Manning going forward and possibly someone for New York to groom for later on if they choose to move from Manning.

Nassib won’t be starting for the Giants unless Manning suffers a serious injury.
