Branden Albert trade: Jeff Ireland says ‘never say never’

The Dolphins general manager isn’t too confident in making a trade with the Chiefs for Branden Albert.

USA TODAY Sports

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said of trading with the Chiefs for offensive tackle Branden Albert that it's "not going to really amount to much," according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero. However, Ireland also added that he should "never say never."

The trade talks between the Chiefs and Dolphins cooled slightly as the draft approached as both teams decided to wait until the end of the first round to make a deal. However, now that both the second and third rounds have been completed as well, an Albert trade may not take place unless the Chiefs agree on swapping the talented tackle for late-round picks or possibly selections from the 2014 draft.

The Dolphins lost Jake Long in free agency to the St. Louis Rams and are in need of finding his replacement at left tackle to help protect the team's quarterback. Miami took a defensive end and a cornerback with their first two picks in the draft before selecting offensive tackle Dallas Thomas out of Tennessee in the third round.

Now that Andre Smith is also no longer an option as he was re-signed by the Bengals on Friday evening, the Dolphins may be forced to look at other free agents to help fill the void left by Long.
