NFL Draft 2013: Mel Kiper likes Chargers, Raiders picks on Friday

In a rare move, Mel Kiper gives positive grades for the Raiders’ Day 2 draft.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. spends months pouring over draft evaluations to come up with opinions and mock drafts.

After the picks, he spends minutes raking through the best and worst drafts from the previous day. In that time, it's a fair assumption that he's listed the Oakland Raiders on the "bad" side of the dual-headed list far more often than any other team.

Based on Day 2 of the 2013 NFL Draft, he put the Raiders in the "good" column, praising the team for taking offensive tackle Menelik Watson in the second round and outside linebacker Sio Moore in the third round.

The Raiders traded down from the third spot in the first round to 12, drafting Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden on Day 1.

San Diego also received praise from Kiper, trading up to take Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o in the second round and nabbing Cal wide receiver Keenan Allen in the third. Both players were highly productive in college, and while Te'o's off-field issues and slower 40-time may have hurt him, and Allen's knee dropped his stock a little, it's tough to argue both players can't at least contribute right away.

The Bengals rounded out Kiper's "good" list, picking up running back Giovani Bernard and defensive end Margus Hunt in the second round and safety Shawn Williams in the third round.

Kiper questioned the Jets', Chiefs' and Cowboys' Day 2 drafts, and with understandable reason. The Jets selected quarterback Geno Smith, which led Kiper to question whether it was worth bringing in a quarterback who isn't likely to start in Week 1 for them. He feels the Cowboys needed to address depth along their defensive line, which they did not do in three Day 2 picks. He felt the Chiefs have a need at inside linebacker they didn't address with tight end Travis Kelce and running back Knile Davis.
